for once!

Finally weve reached some discernable point of hope in our democracy. Nigerian law makers put an end to a bid to extend the tenure of the president from two to three terms. This was to be acgieved by having the lawmakers ammend the constitution. Constitutional reforms that were so hastily packaged and aggressively pushed that it didnt take a rocket scientist to see all the other points were just the padding around Project 3rd term.

Well Im astounded Senators allegedly turned down almost a million dollars each in bribes. Proud in fact.

Finally we can focus on systems and not individuals. I love the fact that this whole fracas held us hostage. The outcome has taught us so much.

I agree but.....
I agree to a large extent with your assessment of the Nigeria situation. Given our penchant for according loyalty to the individuals occupying political office rather than being loyal to the office itself, and given the habit of our leaders surrounding themselves with sycophants ready to tell them only what they are willing to hear, given all the above it is heartwarming to see that for once the second arm of government, the legislature has proven that it is not just an extension of the executive.

My main disappointment is with respect to removal of the constitutional immunity accorded to certain elected office holders is one area of the proposed bill that I wish action had been taken.

hmmmm

yeah. i know how you feel about that. there was just no way to deal with it seperately without prolonging the battle and have members succumb to the extremely tempting cash. or threats. Its a fight for another day.
